Job Posting: Hayden Community Librarian/Manager

The Community Library Network in North Idaho has an exceptional opportunity for an experienced person as the Community Librarian/Manager of its Hayden Library. We are a district system with seven libraries and an outreach department.  The Hayden Library is one of two larger buildings with a service population of approximately 40,000.

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA accredited institution and at least 3 years of public library experience, including two years supervising and evaluating a staff of ten or more.  The candidate should have knowledge of current library technology, including online database/Internet applications, extensive management experience, a strong public service commitment and the ability to work collegially and lead an established team. The successful candidate should be passionate about getting to know his/her community and have outstanding customer service skills.

Serving 13,240 residents over nearly 1,400 square miles, Pend Oreille County Library District’s staff members support library operations in four branches:   Newport, Calispel Valley, Ione and Metalines.  The Director of Library Services reports to the district‘s five-member governing Board of Trustees whichoversees the district’s $600K budget, and provides guidance for strategic and capital improvement planning.   Membership in the Cooperative Information Network (CIN) consortium effectively stretches our collection dollars and our libraries’ borders; CIN provides access to the 27 libraries’ physical collections and shares the cost of electronic media and the KOHA system.  The Pend Oreille County Community Network System that ushered in a state-of-the-art fiber optic backbone to the county allows us to offer 24/7 high speed Wi-Fi at each of our branches.

REQUIRED:

  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university plus three (3) years of progressively responsible public library experience including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity. A combination of education and administrative experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully meet the requirements of the position may be considered.
  • Washington State Librarian certificate (or obtainable within three months of hire)

Salary range starts at $58,000 yearly, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits offered.

Annual PNLA Conference is coming soon

pnla bannerThe annual PNLA conference is known to be an informative learning and networking experience. Join public, academic, and school library folk from Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana and Washington for two-and-a-half days of fun! We kick-off the conference Wednesday afternoon with two fantastic pre-conference sessions, followed by an opening reception. You’ll have the opportunity to meet fellow conference attendees as well as connect with the wide variety of vendors.

There are sessions for everyone, from innovative programming to inspiring leadership. PNLA hosts a unique conference with keynote speakers and author talks at breakfast and lunch each day. This year we welcome Daniel Buchner, Michelle Cederberg, David Poulsen and YRCA nominated author, Cathy Ostlere.

Conference is in Calgary, AB, August 3-5.

Free Workshop: Supercharged Storytimes

You already provide great storytimes. Supercharge them and make them even better!

After several years of research, forty fearless librarians, working with Project VIEWS2 researchers and a small army of UW iSchool students under the guidance of the late Dr. Eliza T. Dresang, were able to demonstrate that public library storytimes really do make a difference when early literacy principles are intentionally incorporated into their delivery. Find out for yourself by attending one of the upcoming free Supercharged Storytimes workshops that will demonstrate how to supercharge your storytimes with research-based tools and techniques that will make your programs:

  • More fun;
  • More creative;
  • Easier to plan; and
  • More effective in helping children learn to read.

These free workshops will be held in the following locations during the first two weeks of May 2016:

He is an active member of the American Library Association and is a past president of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

SUMMARY

Seeking a business-focused library professional who is creative, values collaboration and teamwork, and most importantly, is committed to providing great public library services. Under supervision of a Library Services Manager, this position has a Business and Career Development focus, connecting entrepreneurs in the community with resources to build their businesses, and assisting library members in furthering their career objectives. This position also has a community engagement focus at Cheney and is responsible for developing partnerships on behalf of the library in that community. Provides reference and readers’ advisory, instructs members in use of library resources and services, and identifies customer service and collection needs.

SCHEDULE

The current work schedule at North Spokane Library is Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00am to 6:00pm.

SALARY / WAGE

$4,013.57-$5,016.96 per month in six steps, plus benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance, Employee Assistance Program; 11 paid holidays; paid vacation and sick leave; and participation in the Public Employees Retirement System.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master of Library & Information Science or equivalent and the Professional Librarian’s Certificate issued by the Washington State Library (or its predecessor) as required by RCW 27.04.055. One (1) year of experience in business and career development support in a public library and/or related experience preferred. Effective communication skills; read and use English and understand numbers; working knowledge of personal computers, office software, database software and the Internet; ILS experience preferred. Or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that ensures satisfactory performance of essential job functions.

Program proposals are now being accepted for the 2016 WALE Conference, to be held October 24-25 in beautiful Lake Chelan, WA. This is the 25th annual event for the Washington Library Employees, an interest group of the WA Library Association.

All proposals from library staff, advocates, and partner organizations will be considered. Now is the time to reach out to the dynamic presenters in your professional communities or share your own skills and experience by leading a Conference Session or a Preconference Workshop.

  • Proposals are due no later than April 8.
  • Primary Contacts will be notified of proposal status by April 22.
  • All Preconference Workshops will be held October 25.
  • All Conference Sessions will be held October 26.
